Versatility to meet your challenges

Today, your company must respond to various challenges in order to be a sustainable and competitive business.

Firstly, you must constantly adapt to your market, to demand and to competition. To respond, you need to develop your good or service. Finally, to make it all work, you need to improve the skills management of your employees and their working conditions.

To this end, multi-skilling is an effective way of achieving adequate skills management for your organisation's needs.

Many resources in your company will be called upon in this multi-skilling management. However, it is your employees who remain at the heart of this method.

This notion of versatility is mainly based on two objectives:

  • The extension of a skill to another job, to allow your employee to work on different activities and to move to another position.
  • The integration of new skills into the same job, allowing different tasks and missions to be carried out while remaining in the same job.

‍

The benefits of versatility

There are many benefits to managing multi-skilling in your company.

First of all, one of the effects of this method on staff is toavoid the monotony and routine of fragmented tasks and assignments. In this way, multi-skilling becomes a tool for the development of well-being at work (more motivation, less risk of occupational diseases, RSI/RPS, etc.).

Moreover, the development of versatility allows your employees toincrease their employability. In the same way, you will meet the legal requirements, in particulararticle L6321-1 of the Labour Code. This stipulates that you must ensure that employees are adapted to their workstation and that their ability to hold a position is maintained as it evolves.

In addition, the employees of your company will have the opportunity tolearn new practices, thanks in particular to training. They will develop their skills to be able to work on different jobs or missions, as needed.

This makes your business more flexible, with the ability to handle different production operations, while maintaining the expected quality and productivity.

In addition to the flexibility of your organisation, your employees will increase their performance and autonomy. This will enable you to identify new talent within your company andimprove the organisation of work, particularly in the event of reorganisation or the implementation of a project.

However, thanks to good multiskilling management, it will be possible to temporarily fill the gap until a new person is recruited. Multi-skilling is also useful in the event of a change of job or an increase in production.

Even if the skills acquired are sometimes only moderately used, it is still a beneficial learning experience. It enables the employees concerned to better understand the functioning and constraints of other workplaces and to better anticipate them at their level.

‍

‍

Implement multi-skilling, yes, but properly!

As a result, good management of multi-skilling makes it possible to renew skills, benefit from a high degree of flexibility and improve working conditions, provided it is done correctly. Indeed, if it is not implemented in the right way, multi-skilling can sometimes be accompanied by its share of risks:

  • Poor training of the employees concerned
  • An increase in workload that can lead to burn-out
  • A vague definition of the scope of employee involvement
  • An increase in accidents at work due to the plurality of activities
  • Dilution of skills already mastered by new skills

Therefore, to avoid these risks it is necessary to:

  • Improve the management of internal and external training
  • Clarify the boundaries of employees' scope of activity
  • Define the working conditions and tasks of each position
  • Identify the skills held by each employee
  • Updating acquired skills
  • Define the actions to be implemented: reflections on the training plans to be set up or on recruitment operations
  • Involve staff in the new organisation
